Hope you’ve enjoyed your summer “break”!

Our official season kicks off again this Monday at 7pm with a special lecture::::

Dylan Enright is a 5th year microbiology Ph.D. candidate and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow in the Glassman Lab at University of California Riverside. Also, that time of the year is coming up when we, as myco enthusiasts, would like to help support our fungtastic organization by participating all things SDMYCO related, such as choosing speakers and putting these and other events together, or whatever the assignment may entail and where we can often find a few of us geeking out on mushroom anythings. There are several positions as indicated in the flyer below. The more hands we have, the easier it is on everyone and the more we are able to do. If you like and appreciate what we have going on and would like to see it continue, please consider filling one of the positions in our SDMYCO Board of Directors!!!

MycoSymbiotics is a Decentralized Citizen Research Effort put on by William Padilla-Brown. Mycosymbiotics has its Head Research Facility based in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. We are a team of dedicated environmental regeneration enthusiasts, on a mission to better our local Ecology and Community through the use of Science!
Like the mycelial network, we branch out radically covering all aspects of Symbiotic biological/sociological function.Since 2015, MycoSymbiotics has kept its focus on collecting native Pennsylvania strains of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms from the wild to study in controlled environments. Since summer 2021, MycoSymbiotics has also made its Algal Culture Collection available. MycoSymbiotics hosts an annual festival the first weekend of August every year focused on increasing the ecological literacy of the attendees and the surrounding communities. Breaking down the name Myco-Fungi and Symbiotic- a close cooperative or interdependent relationship, we strive to develop mutually beneficial relationships with those around us and those we work with. In the big, wild world there are a lot of important players that get overlooked. Our team is focused on putting the unnoticed players into the spotlight by researching their potentials for Ecological Regeneration.

Mushroom Dye class this Friday August 26!

Hello fellow Myco-folk!

We hope you are enjoying your warm weather and look forward to the upcoming rainy season.

In the meantime, we have some fun and informative activities for you!

Class Description
In this introductory class you will learn the history and process of mushroom and lichen dyeing. We will explore both local and non-local species and create an item to take home.
Teacher Bio
Sarah Minarik is a foggy Bay Area native, constantly seeking shade and mushrooms in sunny San Diego. She has been passionate about design, textiles and the natural world for the majority of her life. Her love of textiles came from her mother who loved to sew and she transferred these learned skills to costume design as she studied Contemporary Dance at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz was also the place where Sarah really began to get curious about mycology. In 2008 while attending a fungus fair she met Miriam Rice and saw her mushroom dyed textiles. Her jaw dropped – her life forever changed. As a current student of Graphic & Interaction Design at San Diego City College she is so excited to merge her love of design, textiles and mushrooms and share this knowledge with you.
All the best to you, be well and hasta la fungi!!

Cultivation class with Dakota Rambin coming this July 25th

Howdy Myco people!!

We have an upcoming cultivation class and here is some information.

Dakota Rambin, born in Shreveport, Louisiana, is a citizen scientist, mycologist and entrepreneur.
His disdain for mushrooms hastily melted into an incessant infatuation when a teacher in high school urged him to try his first mushroom, and to his bewilderment, it had tasted just like steak.
Eventually moving to California, Dakota became an advocate for educating communities on fungi, and spent most days with his nose buried in the works of those who shared the same passion as him; such as Paul Stamets, and Peter McCoy.
Dakota worked in mushroom cultivation consulting and research, and now is Co-Founder, Chief Operating Officer and Mycologist to his company, iMushrooms. Based in San Diego, he plans to grow mushrooms that emulate the taste of meat, supplement health to communities, and inspire those around the world to discern and cherish the plethora of gifts that fungi bring to the world.
Cultivation Class with Dakota Rambin
Monday, July 25, 2022
6-8pm
Registration required and details to follow
$20 per person
More workshops coming soon!!
Hasta la fungi!

How to Host a Clothing Swap Party

How to Host a Swap Party

What if there is a way to obtain new items while still being environmentally friendly? What if I told you that you can now go shopping for free? Welcome to SWAP Parties.

What’s a swap party?

  • Swap parties have been growing in popularity and offer an alternative in the way we acquire items for ourselves and our household.
  • Swaps are meet ups where people can bring in second-hand items that they own and exchange them with other items that other people bring at no cost.
  • Beyond being economical, eco-friendly, and an excuse to clean out your closet, a swap party with friends is far more fun than a yard sale with strangers.
  • By participating in a swap, you are helping to conserve natural resources, reduce the environmental footprint of producing new goods, and building community.

How to start

  • Set a theme – A swap party can be for clothing, toys, housewares, pet supplies, books, DVDs – anything you can think of! Decide on the type items that will be collected and exchanged.
  • Pick a space – Find a location that will give enough space for people to sort through items. Friendly Tip, adding clothing racks and full body mirrors will help you stay organized.
  • Gather friends and their excess stuff – For this sustainable get-together, people need to participate and show up with items that can be exchanged! Encourage guests to bring new friends to ensure there are plenty of quality things to trade.
  • Send out e-invitations! There are plenty of services for electronic invitations that are an upgrade from sending a text. Check out Paperless Post, Green Envelope, and eVite.
  • Host your swap at the end of the season when people are cleaning out their closets and looking for new pieces to freshen up their wardrobes.

Tricks of the Trade

  • Be clear about what’s swap-worthy. Ask friends to bring clean goods in gently used condition. Set standards of what will and will not be accepted. Be clear that items with stains, holes, rips or odors should be avoided.
  • Organize the Set Up of the Swap. To help people find what they want, sort items into areas based on type of items, color, and style.
  • After the party, take the leftover goods to your local donation center. Goodwill, schools, theatre groups, and pet adoption centers would love your excess items. Visit WasteFreeSD.org to find donation drop-off centers near you to take all the leftovers.

The most important part of SWAP Parties is, not only to have fun, but also to give a second round of life to pieces of items that would have otherwise ended in the landfill.

Want to attend a swap? Go to our events page to learn more about our upcoming Swap Parties!

CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: We’re excited to announce the voting is now open for the CA State Mushroom! VISIT: castatemushroom.org and vote now. One vote per CA resident. Polls close Saturday, May 7 at 11:59pm.
California has a state bird, state flower, state animal, even a state lichen, but not a state mushroom! Given California’s wealth of natural resources and the essential role mushrooms play in maintaining our biodiversity, it is time California had a State Mushroom!
Mycologists, mushroom societies, and other fungus lovers from around the state have identified six mushrooms that would best represent our wondrous state. Now we need the public’s help. All California residents are invited to vote for their favorite mushroom. The winning selection will be taken to the State Legislature to make it official.
This is important. Mushrooms have a central role in California’s ecology and deserve recognition of their contributions. Selection of a CA State Mushroom will help increase awareness of and funding for preservation of mushroom habitat and natural resources. This is the first step in a fun(gi) journey.
Make sure you vote for your favorite mushroom and we are looking forward to seeing you at our activities and meeting.
Hasta la fungi,
Musho love,
SDMYCO
