Holiday Celebration Potluck, December 5th!

Howdy festive fungi folk!
Here’s the information for our
Holiday Celebration Potluck
December 5, 2022
6:30 – 8:30pm

We invite you to bring a delicious dish to share! It does not have to include mushrooms, but those are always a hit! You may also bring store bought if you prefer.

We will have a card to fill out in advance for the ingredients list. This is useful for those that may have allergies or dietary restrictions. ***If you are using wild/foraged mushrooms, please note that also!***

We ask that you bring your own reusable cup/bowl/plate and utensils, since we are environmental stewards. Let’s help promote and save the environment by using less plastic!

Please note that we do not have kitchen access, but there will be outlets for keeping food warm with crock pots.

Gobble gobble,
SDMYCO

Hello Myco Fam!!

Hope you’ve enjoyed your summer “break”!

Our official season kicks off again this Monday at 7pm with a special lecture::::

Dylan Enright is a 5th year microbiology Ph.D. candidate and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow in the Glassman Lab at University of California Riverside. ELECTIONS UPCOMING!!

Also, that time of the year is coming up when we, as myco enthusiasts, would like to help support our fungtastic organization by participating all things SDMYCO related, such as choosing speakers and putting these and other events together, or whatever the assignment may entail and where we can often find a few of us geeking out on mushroom anythings. There are several positions as indicated in the flyer below. The more hands we have, the easier it is on everyone and the more we are able to do. If you like and appreciate what we have going on and would like to see it continue, please consider filling one of the positions in our SDMYCO Board of Directors!!!

Thank you in advance and if interested, please apply here: https://forms.gle/nFZKQMYZJYzaTLUw6

MycoSymbiotics is a Decentralized Citizen Research Effort put on by William Padilla-Brown. Mycosymbiotics has its Head Research Facility based in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. We are a team of dedicated environmental regeneration enthusiasts, on a mission to better our local Ecology and Community through the use of Science!
Like the mycelial network, we branch out radically covering all aspects of Symbiotic biological/sociological function.Since 2015, MycoSymbiotics has kept its focus on collecting native Pennsylvania strains of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms from the wild to study in controlled environments. Since summer 2021, MycoSymbiotics has also made its Algal Culture Collection available. MycoSymbiotics hosts an annual festival the first weekend of August every year focused on increasing the ecological literacy of the attendees and the surrounding communities. Breaking down the name Myco-Fungi and Symbiotic- a close cooperative or interdependent relationship, we strive to develop mutually beneficial relationships with those around us and those we work with. In the big, wild world there are a lot of important players that get overlooked. Our team is focused on putting the unnoticed players into the spotlight by researching their potentials for Ecological Regeneration.

Mushroom Dye class this Friday August 26!

Hello fellow Myco-folk!

We hope you are enjoying your warm weather and look forward to the upcoming rainy season.

In the meantime, we have some fun and informative activities for you!

Class Description
In this introductory class you will learn the history and process of mushroom and lichen dyeing. We will explore both local and non-local species and create an item to take home.
Teacher Bio
Sarah Minarik is a foggy Bay Area native, constantly seeking shade and mushrooms in sunny San Diego. She has been passionate about design, textiles and the natural world for the majority of her life. Her love of textiles came from her mother who loved to sew and she transferred these learned skills to costume design as she studied Contemporary Dance at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz was also the place where Sarah really began to get curious about mycology. In 2008 while attending a fungus fair she met Miriam Rice and saw her mushroom dyed textiles. Her jaw dropped – her life forever changed. As a current student of Graphic & Interaction Design at San Diego City College she is so excited to merge her love of design, textiles and mushrooms and share this knowledge with you.
All the best to you, be well and hasta la fungi!!
