Teacher Bio

Darren Debergh is an internationally renowned chef who has captivated the culinary world with his innovative and inspired dishes. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Darren developed a passion for cooking at a young age, teaching himself the art of creating delicious and visually stunning dishes.

Despite his lack of formal culinary training, Darren’s talent and passion for cooking quickly caught the attention of food critics and diners alike. He gained recognition for his unique style and flavor combinations, drawing inspiration from his travels and experiences.

In 2013, Darren made the move to San Diego, where he joined kitchens the likes of: Searsucker, La Villa, & Bleu Boheme. Currently Darren is part of the team at Wild Thyme Catering. His expertise in the culinary arts and his passion for using locally sourced and sustainable ingredients have helped establish the catering company as one of the leading providers of gourmet catering services in the region.

In addition to his work at Wild Thyme Catering, Darren also serves as the head of research at D Squared Concepts, a cutting-edge food fermentation company. He uses his extensive knowledge of flavor profiles and culinary techniques to develop innovative new products that are changing the way people think about food and fermentation.

Darren’s passion for cooking and his commitment to using sustainable ingredients and practices have earned him numerous accolades and awards, including gold medals at prestigious culinary competitions such as Gold Medal Plates.

Today, Darren Debergh is widely recognized as one of the most talented and innovative self-taught chefs of his region. His work at Wild Thyme Catering and D Squared Concepts is helping to shape the future of the culinary arts, and his expertise and passion continue to inspire food lovers everywhere.

Teacher Bio

Dennis Sharmahd, Edible Landscaper, Herbalist, Mycologist grew up with rare fruits and an edible landscaped garden in Lemon Grove. He has been traveling in the American South West, Mexico and Brazil hunting for rare fruits, herbs, mushrooms and vegetables. He has also been collecting and growing rare cactus and other fruits at his small farm north of Escondido for over 30 years.

Art in the Park & Summer Potluck

Hello MycoFriends!

Our beloved potluck is back again and this time for a summer kick off edition!

Monday, June 5
Art in the Park & Summer Potluck
Casa del Prado Room 101 in Balboa Park (adjacent to the Natural History Museum)
5:30 – 8:30pm

Please join us for a fun(gi) evening!

We’re celebrating the end of our regular season and kicking off the summer!

POTLUCK
We invite you to bring a delicious dish to share! It does not have to include mushrooms, but those are always a hit! You may also bring store bought if you prefer.

We will have a card to fill out in advance for the ingredients list. This is useful for those that may have allergies or dietary restrictions.

***If you are using wild/foraged mushrooms, please note that also!***

We ask that you bring your own reusable cup/bowl/plate and utensils, since we are environmental stewards. Let’s help promote and save the environment by using less plastic!

Please note that we do not have kitchen access, but there will be outlets for keeping food warm with crock pots.

ART – GAME OF SHROOMS
We’ll also have some arts and crafts supplies so that you can make something and participate in Game of Shrooms!

Howdy Mycophiles,

We are so happy to have had some rain before our upcoming foray for our Fungus Fair!

Remember, if you are not a member and would like to participate, you can…

  • come to the foray (members only, so sign up at http://sdmyco.org/membership/ )
  • go foraging in a woody, wet area and pick some mushrooms
  • bring these to either the pre-day set up on Saturday (where you can help us set up for the fair from 4 – 8))
  • or bring your mushrooms to the ID table early Sunday
  • become a volunteer at the fair – we can still use your help!

For this year’s fair, we have a banger line up as always!!!
